Describe how you plan to pursue your academic interests and why you want to explore them at USC specifically. Please feel free to address your first and second-choice major selections. (250 words)

At two ends of the spectrum, I am an analytical thinker and an artistic pursuer. Science challenges my thoughts. Dance tells my story. At USC, I believe that with its multidisciplinary studies, I will expand my passion for science while exploring the depth of dance as an art form.

As someone who seeks interest in discovering the links between genetics and society, I would like to explore the links between biology and dance, uncovering how human development – either neurologically or physically – affects the speed at which we learn or how our upbringings shape the way we move to music. Taking electives such as BISC 480L Developmental Biology and DANC 305g Dance Science: Analysis of Dance Movement, I aim to experiment my theories through self-choreography and improvisation, presenting my creations to peers and teachers while gaining insights into how varied upbringings in distinct environments influence our movement dynamics on the dance floor.

Outside academics, I envision myself practicing for the next dance show with the Xpressions Dance Company, whilst simultaneously spending early mornings at the Uytengsu Aquatics Centre training for both the NCAA and the PAC-12 Conference. Because like dance, the underwater realm holds a sense of comfort for me.

In the heart of LA, the opportunities for me to flourish are endless. Transitioning from evolutionary lectures to gliding across in tights and a leotard to flying across the pool, USC provides me the space and rigor to delve deeper into my passions.

As an athlete of many years, the significance of coach-athlete relationships cannot be underestimated.

At 11, I was told to change my diet to salads and wholemeal bread months before my first rhythmic gymnastics competition, which reminded me to look lean and pretty enough to compete. Maybe I was naive or maybe I didn’t understand the true meaning behind those words, but my personal encounter with body shaming – initiated by my coach of seven years – would undermine the profound impact that these relationships hold.

As I grew older, the weight of those words manifested not in their content, but in its source – my coach, someone I had trusted for guidance and self-improvement. The realization that I had been body shamed within what was supposed to be a safe environment, highlighted the vulnerability of all athletes; and for the first time, I realized that beyond the physical training and skill development, an athlete’s emotional and psychological aspects are equally crucial.

Every coach-athlete relationship acts as a compass, shaping not only the trajectory of athletic potential but also our self-confidence and self-perception. Building a supportive, respectful bond ensures that athletes excel in their own domain without the critical simplicity of words.

Thus, from my experience, I hope to bring my audience to realize the crucial need for coaches to recognize the profound influence they have over their athletes and to start fostering environments that stimulate a positive mindset, empowering them to flourish as an individual.
